Love this song, so many memories, great stories in the lyrics, as you know it mentions Jimi Hendrix, in 1969, βand, man, did he look pretty illβ then βhe said one word to me, and that was "dead"β¦ just one year before Hendrix actually died.
Thanks for writing that, Nic, since I'm not doing much commentary. A little piece of history right there in the song. I just love the lyrics because, as you said, they tell a great story, and they're so descriptive that you can 'see' it. Love it too.
Glad that Leeds music journo Jason Barnard published it since it has some deeper threads with Kooper's history. The Stones had their tentacles everywhere, so it's more of a tangle. Love this, thanks.
Thanks, Michael! That is a great article on Al Kooper -- he sounds like a lot of fun to interview and love his anecdotes. It sounds like his autobiography would be a great read.
Very nice job you and Jason did on that. I've now subscribed to the Strange Brew, looks like a lot of artist interviews and articles on there.
Jason is way more connected than I am. I'm more editorial (get more of this, less of that) and Mark did the heavy lifting with the interview since we couldn't get a three-way sound thing going (weird) ... Al kept us going over two days of interviews. He's still recording!
I didn't know that. That tune is on my list, so I'll note it when I put it up (and mention you and your wonderful stack). That guy seems to be everywhere!

Saw the Stones for the first time live in Chicago two weeks ago. This is my favorite song of theirs. It represents the truth of life!
Wow, how lucky were you! One of my faves too and have to agree a lot of wisdom in a very sweet package.
This is great, Ellen. Mark Campbell and I had a lovely chat with Al Kooper back in 2023:

Iβm still recovering from learning that Mick sang uncredited vocals in Carly Simonβs βYouβre so Vainβ - to me that was a shining moment
I didn't know that. That tune is on my list, so I'll note it when I put it up (and mention you and your wonderful stack). That guy seems to be everywhere!
Thank you! Apparently Simon called him and said we need some backup vocals. Can you come in? And voilaβ¦
My 12-year-old is the one that has gotten me into this song and the FACTS surrounding it. She knows every line and sings it so beautifully.
How cool that you're raising a rock chick! And that she sings the Stones. Well done!
She sings Carly and now Alanis. I finally signed her up for school of rock camp this summer. I think we need a musical theater hiatus
That's hysterical. Keep telling her, moms always get a row of seats and all-access passes, so it's ingrained behavior when she becomes famous.
I tell that to both my kids
